Old News of the Day–April 12-18

At the NJ Digital Newspaper Project Office, we have found ourselves looking at how the newspapers portrayed the events of this week in 1912. The Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15, but the newspapers for that day mistakenly stated that all aboard were safe. The April 16 headlines told a very different story.

Below are the April 15, 1912 and April 16, 1912 front page headlines from the Newark Evening Star and Newark Advertiser.

Next are the April 15, 1912 and April 16, 1912 Perth Amboy Evening News.

As a weekly, the Bridgeton Pioneer didn’t publish until April 18, 1912–a day when the full extent of the disaster was clear. Although front page news, the story appeared at the bottom left.
