Old News of the Day–April 2

At the NJ Digital Newspaper office, we sometimes go looking for stories around a specific topic–a holiday, for example–when we look for news to feature. That can be fun, but it’s also really exciting when we find something totally unexpected. The April 2, 1908 Star and Newark Advertiser carried such a “this old news is news to us” story about the appearance of a dogsled and team in Newark:

“From Alaska, in the frigid North, to New York, a journey of ten thousand miles on foot, has been completed by Eli G. Smith, a United States mail carrier, with his team of seven dogs. Smith passed through Newark early today . . .”
