Pistachio Day

February 26th is Pistachio Day! At the NJ Digital Newspaper Project office, we thought we’d share a few pistachio related items from the 1921 Perth Amboy Evening News.

An article with suggestions for what to serve to celebrate the “17th of Ireland” carries a recipe for pistachio ice cream. References to “Junket” had us quickly checking Merriam-Webster’s, where we learned it’s “a dessert of sweetened flavored milk set with rennet.” The tablet in the recipe was probably produced by the Junket company.

Our last selection comes from a sports page that announces a new Y.M.C.A. bowling league with all teams named for nuts. One team proudly bore the name “Pistachios.” Other nutty names included Chestnuts, Peanuts, Cocoanuts, and Hickorynuts.

It was Pistachios vs Walnuts the week of September 26, 1921!
