Curing Tuberculosis with a Movie?

To commemorate World Tuberculosis Day, what better way to raise funds and spread awareness of this disease than with a film! This article, featured in November 22, 1912 Perth Amboy Evening News promotes treatment and prevention of tuberculosis. The National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis got an author and poet James Oppenheim to write the film, called “Hope”, which is about a banker’s engagement in a tuberculosis campaign to build a sanitarium. The banker, named John Harvey, is also in love with his bookkeeper’s daughter, Edith. He was currently building a house for them when Edith contracted tuberculosis. She made the difficult decision to seek treatment in a sanitarium away from home to prevent the disease from spreading. At the end of the film, she successfully recovers from the illness, living as a happy bride in their brand new home.
