The New Jersey Digital Newspaper Project’s advisory board met on November 30, 2017. Caryn Radick, the Principal Investigator for the NEH grant, gave a project update. She outlined the progress to date and upcoming milestones. She gave an overview of the detailed work which goes into getting the newspapers online. Radick made special note this labor intensive work is largely performed by project technicians Giovanna Ligato-Pugliese and Jacob Paul (who contributed to the photos in this post), with exemplary assistance from team members Peter Konin, Isaiah Beard, and John Brennan. Introductory remarks and observations were also made by project conveners Mary Chute and Ron Becker, and Rutgers’ Dee Magnoni.
The board discussed the process of applying for a new round of funding from the NEH. (The current grant expires on August 31, 2018.) Board member Maxine Lurie delivered a presentation about important historical events in New Jersey during the mid-late 19th and early 20th centuries. These could help frame the grant application’s narrative and inform future newspaper selections. The board enthusiastically responded and started to consider potential titles for the next round which highlight this approach.
More work will be done in the coming weeks to finalize the application. In the meantime, activity continues in earnest to digitize the current crop of newspapers. Look for a special announcement about these digitization efforts in early 2018!
